D. J. began his racing career in 2004 racing go-karts at Four Corners Kart Club in Aztec, New Mexico. He also ran some races with Albuquerque Speedway Karting, finishing sixth in track points.
During the 2005 season, he continued to race go-karts in both Albuquerque and Aztec, New Mexico, with support from M. L. Burris, Inc., Huntington Beach, California. He was track champion in Albuquerque Jr II Lights, IKF 4A Regional Champion, and finished Sixth in National Speedway Karting and Fifth in the New Mexico State Championship. He also finished second in the track championship points at Aztec.
The 2006 season saw D.J. move to 600cc mini-sprints, running with the New Mexico Mini Sprint Association with some success. The gremlins of racing appeared on the scene with three blown engines. Even with setbacks he finished seventh in points and was awarded Rookie of the Year honors among four participating rookie drivers.
D. J. started the 2007 season traveling to Mooresville, North Carolina, to interview with a Driver Development program at Lowe's Motor Speedway. With the addition of a new chassis by Foz Race Cars, support from Speedpartz.com and Clifford Cycles, and returning sponsorship with Inn at the Springs, LLC, Pagosa Springs, CO, DJ participated in races at Hollywood Hills Speedway, Albuquerque, New Mexico; Aztec Speedway, Aztec, New Mexico; Thunder Valley Raceway, Show Low, Arizona; Thunder Mountain Speedway, Olathe, CO; and Desert Thunder Raceway, Price, Utah. In addition to racing his way to 2nd place championship finishes for both the MMNMI Club and Hollywood Hills Speedway, he also won two trophy dashes along the way. He also participated in a 2-day one-on-one sprint car driving school with USAC/SCRA Champion, Cory Kruseman.
The 2008 season is looking to be very exciting with DJ continuing to race at Hollywood Hills Speedway with the MMNMI club, along with plans to participate in selected races in California, Arizona, Colorado, Utah and Oklahoma with the goal of securing a seat in a sprint car by year's end.
